A Shop for Killers Episode 6, titled Jeong Jinman, shifts the story into the past to reveal the violent history connecting Jin-man, Bale, Seong-jo, and Babylon. Fourteen years earlier, Jin-man worked as a mercenary for the powerful organization Babylon alongside Bale and other operatives. Although the team successfully completed dangerous missions together, Jin-man soon discovered that Bale followed a completely different code when dealing with civilians. During one operation, Bale encounters civilians who are desperately trying to protect their child. Instead of following the team's orders and leaving non-combatants alone, Bale murders them without hesitation. A fellow operative witnesses what happened and is subsequently killed as well. Jin-man arrives at the scene and is horrified when Bale shoots a young boy who poses no immediate threat. The incident exposes Bale's willingness to kill anyone in his path simply because he enjoys the violence. Bale is eventually brought before an investigation and trial. Despite knowing the truth, Jin-man and Seong-jo refuse to directly testify against him. Jin-man privately asks Babylon's superior, Lee Yong-han, to keep Bale away from his future operations. Yong-han initially agrees, but a higher authority later orders Jin-man and Bale to work together again. Their next assignment takes them to Laos as the team attempts to transport a major drug supplier into China. Before the mission begins, Jin-man makes it clear to Bale that civilians must not be killed. Bale appears to accept the warning, but once the operation starts, he once again ignores the rules. He murders innocent people and uses explosives recklessly while Jin-man and Pasin focus on completing their objective. When Jin-man discovers the extent of Bale's actions, he decides that Bale must be stopped and prepares to report him after the mission. As the operation reaches its climax, Jin-man discovers Min-hye trapped inside the building. Rather than leaving her behind, he chooses to rescue her. Bale soon realizes what Jin-man is doing and confronts him. The two mercenaries engage in a brutal fight, with Bale making it clear that he has no distinction between friends, enemies, or innocent civilians when it comes to killing for money. Jin-man struggles against Bale and is eventually overpowered. Just as Bale is about to finish him, Min-hye intervenes and shoots Bale in the eye, giving Jin-man an opportunity to fight back. Bale threatens Jin-man's family, but Jin-man refuses to let him escape and drives a knife into him. With the building about to explode, Jin-man gets Min-hye to safety and leaves Bale behind. The resulting explosion makes Jin-man believe that his former partner has finally been killed. To protect himself and hide the truth surrounding the operation, Jin-man tells the others that Bale sacrificed himself while saving him. The team accepts the story and mourns Bale before Jin-man decides to leave Babylon's operations behind. However, Jin-man soon realizes that Babylon is suspicious of his decision and that people are following him. He carefully avoids them before finally reaching his home, where he meets his family and young Ji-an. The episode's final moments completely change the meaning of Jin-man's supposed victory. Seong-jo is practicing shooting when he suddenly senses someone behind him. When he turns around, he discovers Bale standing alive. The man everyone believed had died in the explosion has survived, setting the stage for the revenge that will eventually reach Jin-man's family. Episode 6 provides the missing history behind Bale's hatred of Jin-man and explains why Jin-man ultimately abandoned Babylon. It also reveals the origin of Min-hye's connection to Jin-man while establishing Bale as a dangerous enemy from Jin-man's past whose survival has consequences for Ji-an in the present.
