Our Universe Episode 1 begins by bringing Woo Hyun-jin and Sun Tae-hyung together in the worst possible way. Hyun-jin is trying to find a special wedding gift for her older sister, Hyun-joo, who is preparing to marry Tae-hyung's older brother, Sun Woo-jin. When she spots a beautiful wall lamp that her sister loves, the price is far beyond what she can afford, so she turns to a secondhand marketplace and finds the exact lamp being sold by Tae-hyung. Their first meeting is anything but romantic. Hyun-jin carefully inspects the lamp and tries to negotiate the price, while Tae-hyung grows increasingly irritated by her questions and attitude. What should have been a simple secondhand transaction turns into a heated argument, and the situation gets even worse when the lamp's bulb breaks. Neither of them leaves with a good impression of the other. In the middle of the mess, Tae-hyung ends up with Hyun-jin's phone, and the photos and messages on it reveal something neither of them expected — the woman standing in front of him is about to become his sister-in-law. Tae-hyung's own family history is complicated. He grew up in an orphanage after being separated from his older brother Woo-jin, carrying years of resentment over what he believed was abandonment. Memories from his childhood show how much he once depended on Woo-jin, especially after his brother gave him a camera and promised that he would come back for him. When the brothers finally meet again as adults, Tae-hyung's anger is still too deep. Instead of welcoming Woo-jin back into his life, he tells him to stay away. Meanwhile, Hyun-jin is deeply attached to her older sister and wants nothing more than to see her happy. She supports Hyun-joo's relationship with Woo-jin and even helps with the wedding preparations. Tae-hyung, however, refuses to attend the wedding, leaving his relationship with his brother unresolved. The story then moves three years forward, showing how differently their lives have developed. Hyun-jin is struggling to secure a permanent position despite working hard, while Tae-hyung has stepped away from photography and built a more stable life for himself. Just when things seem to be settling down, tragedy strikes. Woo-jin and Hyun-joo are involved in a devastating car accident and both lose their lives, leaving their young son Woo-joo without his parents. At the funeral, Hyun-jin is overwhelmed by grief while Tae-hyung finally comes face-to-face with his nephew. Although Tae-hyung has spent years trying to distance himself from his brother, Woo-joo instinctively feels comfortable around him and follows him closely. When Hyun-jin suffers a ligament injury during the aftermath of the funeral, Tae-hyung unexpectedly steps in and takes care of Woo-joo for a while. But when the question of the child's future comes up, Tae-hyung initially refuses to accept responsibility for his brother's family, insisting that he has already cut ties with Woo-jin. Hyun-jin, despite having her own life and career plans, makes the painful decision to raise Woo-joo herself. Tae-hyung eventually says goodbye and walks away, seemingly determined to return to the solitary life he has built. But his brief time with Woo-joo hints that the little boy may have already reached a part of him he has spent years trying to protect. Episode 1 closes on that emotional turning point, setting up the unexpected co-parenting story between two people who started as complete strangers, became reluctant in-laws, and are now connected by a child who has suddenly become the center of both their worlds.
