Episode 5 opens on the image that ended Episode 4 and refuses to let the audience off gently. Yeo-ri is standing outside the hospital, face to face with what she believes is Gang-uk's ghost. She reaches for him anyway, the way she always reaches for the spirits she is obligated to help — and then she feels a heartbeat. He is alive. A flashback fills in what she missed: his heart had restarted in the moments after she walked out, and a doctor who had just given up found themselves scrambling back to the monitors. When Gang-uk sees her expression he understands, with more quiet than the moment probably deserves, exactly what she thought she was looking at. Pil-dong and Hyeong-min, relieved and slightly sheepish about their earlier breakdown, leave Yeo-ri to watch over Gang-uk through the night. It is the last day of the month — the outer edge of the window during which anyone who has touched her bare skin continues to see spirits — and the hospital is, predictably, full of them. They spend the night managing one restless presence after another, the two of them working in the close, low-lit rhythm that has become their version of normal. A quiet moment passes between them on the hospital couch, and for the first time Gang-uk makes no effort to conceal that he is interested in her. Yeo-ri does not respond directly. In the morning, when the month turns and his ability lapses, she tells him clearly that they should not see each other again. He does not argue. They part. The press has found the story by the time Yeo-ri returns to the Raina Hotel. Reporters crowd the entrance, drawn by the combination of a kidnapping, a car assault, and a prosecutor listed as critical. Min-hwan is already there. He moves through them smoothly, positions himself between Yeo-ri and the cameras, and walks her inside — doing, with practiced ease, the exact thing Gang-uk had wanted to do and arrived too late to manage. Gang-uk watches from across the street. The jealousy he feels is visible and immediate, and he makes no particular attempt to hide it. Min-hwan's presence in Yeo-ri's orbit becomes more deliberate from here. He invites her to an evening event at the Yeeon Museum of Art, and she accepts, partly out of obligation and partly to distract herself from the absence she has decided to enforce. Gang-uk arrives at the same event with Im Seo-hyeon beside him — Seo-hyeon, who works in his office and who spends most of the evening close enough to hold his hand. Yeo-ri clocks this immediately and says nothing, which is its own kind of answer. Something happens at the event — a disturbance that empties the room — and in the aftermath, Gang-uk finds Yeo-ri alone in one of the gallery spaces. He tells her he can still see ghosts. She knows he is lying before he finishes the sentence, because she would know, and because there is a ghost standing next to him that he is clearly not reacting to. He abandons the lie almost immediately and proposes something else instead: a formal arrangement. She gives him the information; he investigates on the legal side; together they close cases. He is in the middle of making his case when Min-hwan reappears and Gang-uk leaves, expression flat, pace a little faster than necessary. What she finds in that gallery, before Gang-uk's interruption, is the beginning of something much older than any of them. A male ghost — a Joseon-era painter named Dowon — has been haunting the museum, attached to two portraits and a love letter three centuries old. Yeo-ri visits the museum's director, Lee Hwa-yong, who explains that Dowon was a painter of that period and that the letter, signed by a woman named Hwagyeongdang, was found in the tomb of Prince Pyeong-gun. The director believes the letter is the prince's. Yeo-ri, who has spoken to Dowon directly, already suspects it is not. At home that night, she thinks about Gang-uk's offer. She also thinks, against her better judgment, about Seo-hyeon's hand. By morning she has made a decision. She goes back to find him, and when she does, they agree: they will work together. They will start with Dowon. The episode ends on this new partnership — two people who agreed not to see each other, choosing, one more time, to try.
