📖 Episode Synopsis

The Lament of Autumn Episode 1 (2026) begins in Nanhuai City in 1919, during a turbulent period in Chinese history when military leaders compete for political influence and control. Following the death of the acting president, northern warlord Cheng Jun seeks support from regional commanders for his presidential ambitions. Yu Zhongquan, the powerful commander of the Nanhuai Army, discusses the proposed military alliance with his officers. Although several commanders hesitate to commit themselves, Zhongquan believes that taking a calculated risk is necessary to protect his position and secure his family's future. Their serious political discussions are interrupted when a parrot flies into the meeting room, revealing that his rebellious fifth son, Yu Changxuan, has been absent from military duty for several days. Meanwhile, Yu Changxuan is enjoying himself at a gambling establishment, surrounded by companions who flatter him because of his wealth and family influence. After winning several rounds of mahjong, he increases the stakes and even offers to cover other players' losses. His associate Li Boren praises his generosity and attempts to persuade him to help a relative obtain a transfer into the Transportation Section. Changxuan dismisses the request and shows little interest in fulfilling the responsibilities associated with his military position. His carefree behavior stands in sharp contrast to his father's serious political ambitions and growing frustration with his son's lack of discipline. At the Yu family residence, the atmosphere is far more somber. Zhao Baoru mourns the death of her son Yu Mingxuan, who was killed in battle only two months after his marriage. The family continues to struggle with the loss, especially Mingxuan's widow, Jun Min Ru, whose future remains tied to the household. Baoru tries to comfort her daughter-in-law while reflecting on the family's grief. The contrast between Mingxuan's sacrifice and Changxuan's irresponsible lifestyle deepens the tension surrounding the surviving son. When Changxuan finally returns home drunk, his father becomes furious. Zhongquan orders him to be punished for neglecting his military responsibilities and behaving disgracefully. Instead of showing remorse, Changxuan defiantly hands his father a feather duster and challenges him to proceed. Their argument becomes increasingly personal when Changxuan refers to the deaths of his brothers, suggesting that these losses are the only reason his father has not punished him more severely. Zhongquan strikes him, while Baoru desperately intervenes to protect her only surviving son. Chen Wanqiao, another woman in the household, creates a distraction involving a young child, allowing Baoru to have Changxuan taken to his room. Baoru personally tends to Changxuan's injuries, assisted by his younger sister Yu Jinxuan, who brings medicine. Their conversation returns to the tragedy of Mingxuan's death and the responsibility the family carries toward his widow. Changxuan's younger sister Yu Qixuan criticizes his irresponsible behavior and compares him unfavorably with the successful young military commander Xiao Beichen. Changxuan resents the comparison and refuses to take her criticism seriously. After the family members leave, he asks his associate Gu Ruitong to prepare a car so that he can visit his deceased brother's grave. On the way to Guanyin Pavilion, heavy rain makes the mountain road difficult to navigate. Changxuan eventually orders the driver to turn back. Suddenly, a young woman runs into the path of his car, forcing the driver to stop abruptly. Her belongings and silver coins scatter across the wet ground. Changxuan steps out to help her collect the money. The woman thanks him before hurrying away, leaving behind a bracelet that catches his attention. This brief encounter introduces Ye Pingjun, a determined student at Mingde Girls' High School whose life is far removed from the privileges enjoyed by the Yu family. Pingjun lives with her widowed mother, who suffers from a chronic lung illness and requires continuing medical care. With money running short, Pingjun urgently needs employment. Her friend Song Han Zhi offers her financial assistance, and although Pingjun initially hesitates, she accepts the money and promises to repay it once she finds a job. The sweets included with the money provide a small moment of comfort amid her worries. Despite her difficult circumstances, Pingjun remains proud, resourceful, and determined to support her mother without depending permanently on other people. Elsewhere, Changxuan attends an auction where a valuable necklace once owned by a Russian duchess becomes the center of attention. Master Tong attempts to impress Tao Ziyi by bidding an enormous sum for the jewelry. When Changxuan arrives, he disrupts the proceedings and demands that the bidding be reopened. He refuses to accept Tong's objections and turns the confrontation into a humiliating public spectacle. Changxuan announces that Tong's pride will effectively be put up for auction, forcing the wealthy man into an increasingly embarrassing situation. Eventually, Changxuan purchases the necklace for twice Tong's original winning bid and orders imported Scotch whisky for the assembled guests. His extravagant display appears intended to impress Tao Ziyi, although his unpredictable behavior makes his true intentions difficult to understand. While Changxuan navigates the world of wealthy families and social entertainment, Pingjun attends a job interview at the Xiangxi Hotel. The interviewers focus on applicants' family backgrounds, connections, and financial resources. Pingjun has none of these advantages, but she explains that she has experience working at a French restaurant, speaks English and French, and understands Western dining customs. When the interviewer questions her suitability for serving wealthy guests, she challenges his assumptions by explaining the humble origins of golf. She also notices that a painting displayed in the hotel ballroom depicts concealed assassins, making it an inappropriate choice for the establishment. Her observations impress hotel owner Jin Zhongfang, who overhears the conversation and offers her a clerical position. Pingjun eagerly accepts the opportunity. When the hotel needs additional staff for an all-night celebration at Lidu Hall, Jin arranges for workers to be transferred from another venue. He also gives Pingjun the opportunity to earn extra money by helping at the event. Desperate to cover her mother's medical expenses, she agrees. At the celebration, she unexpectedly encounters Tao Ziyi, a wealthy young woman she remembers from school. Pingjun recalls how Ziyi once defaced her photograph after Pingjun achieved excellent academic results and how other students mocked her for competing academically with a privileged classmate. Hoping to avoid another unpleasant encounter, Pingjun concentrates on her work and tries to remain unnoticed. Changxuan's complicated relationship with Ziyi becomes another source of tension. Li Boren questions him about the expensive necklace and his apparently inconsistent interest in her. Ziyi's elder sister Tao Yayi also warns her against becoming emotionally involved with a man who is surrounded by women and spends money recklessly. Ziyi, however, believes she understands Changxuan well enough to handle his unpredictable personality. When he approaches her during the celebration, she expects him to invite her to dance, but he instead asks another woman to join him. A later change of partners brings Changxuan and Ziyi together, and their conversation reveals a mixture of teasing, jealousy, and mutual curiosity. Their exchange is abruptly interrupted when gunfire erupts inside the venue. Changxuan immediately shields Ziyi and helps her escape the gunfire. Armed attackers disguised as hotel employees have infiltrated the celebration, and several people are killed during the sudden violence. After the shooting, Changxuan takes control of the situation and orders the remaining staff to be searched. He notices that the attackers appear to have used silver pens as identifying marks. During the search, a matching pen is discovered in Pingjun's pocket. She insists that she has no connection to the attack, but Changxuan recognizes her as the young woman he helped on the rainy road. Convinced that Pingjun may know more than she admits, Changxuan orders her to be taken to military headquarters for questioning. During the interrogation, he attempts to frighten her by having another prisoner punished in front of her. He demands the names of the people behind the assassination attempt and refuses to accept her explanation that she came to the hotel seeking employment and only agreed to work at the celebration because extra staff were needed. He also reveals that he knows personal details about her life, including her school, home address, and her mother's illness. By bringing up her mother's medical treatment, Changxuan makes it clear that Pingjun's family could become vulnerable if she refuses to cooperate. Although frightened and under enormous pressure, Pingjun refuses to confess to something she did not do. She carefully considers what she observed at the hotel and remembers seeing a schoolmate, Feng Yao, among the people connected to the job interviews. Feng Yao had not been selected for the position, yet Pingjun later noticed her wearing a waitress's uniform at the celebration. This inconsistency gives Pingjun reason to believe that someone may have deliberately arranged the circumstances that led to her arrest. Instead of allowing Changxuan to intimidate her into surrendering, she proposes a bold bargain. Pingjun asks Changxuan to release her and give her ten days to find the real culprit who framed her. If she fails to prove her innocence within that period, he can arrest her again. Changxuan initially treats the proposal as an absurd challenge, but Pingjun argues that her circumstances make it unlikely that she would abandon her sick mother and disappear. She insists that she has every reason to discover the truth and clear her name. Her courage and determination create an unexpected confrontation between the privileged military commander and the struggling young student who refuses to be intimidated by his authority. The first episode of The Lament of Autumn establishes the central conflict between Yu Changxuan and Ye Pingjun against the backdrop of political intrigue, family grief, and military power struggles in 1919 China. Their first encounters reveal two very different personalities: Changxuan is wealthy, rebellious, intimidating, and accustomed to controlling the people around him, while Pingjun is resourceful, principled, and unwilling to surrender her dignity even when her freedom is at stake. The assassination attempt and the ten-day bargain set the stage for an investigation that will bring them closer while exposing dangerous secrets, complicated loyalties, and the emotional consequences of their unexpected connection.
