📖 Episode Synopsis

The Lament of Autumn Episode 5 (2026), also known as Yu Dian Qiu Episode 5, continues after Yu Changxuan's birthday celebration and his increasingly complicated relationship with Ye Pingjun. Tao Ziyi is upset by Changxuan's attention to Pingjun, and Li Boren finds her crying. Rather than encouraging her to compete directly with Pingjun, he suggests that she win Changxuan's affection by understanding what he truly wants. He tells her that Changxuan is interested in building a larger racetrack and mentions Changping Mountain as a suitable location. Ziyi begins considering how she can use her family's influence and resources to regain Changxuan's attention. Meanwhile, Yu Zhongquan prepares to strengthen his political position by supporting Governor Chu's alliance in favor of Master Cheng's presidential ambitions. The decision involves committing the Yu Army's elite Ninth Corps, a move that raises concerns among his officers. Their meeting is interrupted by Feng Sanli, a successful military commander known for his battlefield achievements and outspoken personality. Feng arrives with fine liquor and greets Zhongquan like an old friend. When the other officers criticize his behavior during an official meeting, Feng dismisses their concerns and argues that military victories come from fighting rather than endless discussion. Zhongquan tolerates his old comrade's bluntness and sends him away to change before continuing the meeting. At the Yu family residence, Zhao Baoru encourages Changxuan to settle his relationship with Ziyi if he intends to marry her. Changxuan avoids giving a clear answer. Minru then asks whether another woman has attracted his attention, and he remains silent as thoughts of Pingjun come to mind. His growing interest in her becomes more apparent when he learns from Li Boren that Pingjun caught a severe cold after spending the night on the boat with him. Li suggests that Changxuan should visit her and express his concern properly. Back in his room, Changxuan examines the contract binding Pingjun to the Xiangxi Hotel and remembers their recent encounters. Although he tries to convince himself that she is merely a stubborn young woman, he cannot easily put the matter out of his mind. The following day, Changxuan visits Pingjun's home and introduces himself to her mother as a colleague. He brings expensive ginseng and cordyceps intended to help with Mrs. Ye's lung condition, claiming that the gifts have been provided through their workplace. Pingjun immediately suspects that he has come for personal reasons and tries to make him leave. Her mother, however, considers his behavior polite and welcomes him into the house. Changxuan praises Mrs. Ye's care for her daughter and her commitment to Pingjun's education, making a favorable impression despite Pingjun's obvious irritation. When Pingjun and Changxuan are alone, she demands to know why he has come. Instead of arguing, he produces the contract she has wanted returned. He deliberately holds it away from her, forcing her to reach for it. During the struggle, Pingjun accidentally falls into his arms. Changxuan finally gives her the document and confirms that their agreement is over. Pingjun immediately asks him to leave, but her mother invites him to stay for a meal. Changxuan accepts and even helps carry the dishes, behaving like a considerate guest while Pingjun silently urges him to finish eating and go home. During the meal, Mrs. Ye repeatedly offers Changxuan food and encourages Pingjun to serve him. Pingjun reluctantly complies, making it clear through her expressions that she wants him to leave as soon as possible. Changxuan notices the simple cornmeal buns Pingjun is eating and decides to try one himself. Unaccustomed to the food, he struggles to swallow it and needs soup to recover. The awkward moment provides some humor, but it also highlights the differences between their backgrounds. Changxuan is accustomed to wealth and privilege, whereas Pingjun has learned to manage with very little. After the meal, Pingjun escorts Changxuan outside and tells him that they belong to different worlds. She insists that their agreement has ended and asks him not to interfere in her life again. Changxuan is reluctant to leave and hints that they will meet again. Shortly afterward, he encounters a postman carrying a letter addressed to Pingjun. The postman explains that the letter comes from Jiang Xue Ting, Pingjun's fiancé, who has been writing to her regularly from overseas for four years. Changxuan is shocked to discover that Pingjun has a fiancé and learns that Jiang is expected to return in the autumn. He tells the postman to deliver the letter and keep their conversation private. At home, Pingjun reads Jiang's letter and tells her mother that he is doing well and plans to return. Mrs. Ye then asks about the visitor who came to their home. When Pingjun explains that he belongs to the powerful Yu family, her mother becomes concerned. She warns Pingjun against becoming entangled with someone whose family has so much influence and whose world is filled with political danger. Pingjun reassures her that she has left her position at the Xiangxi Hotel and no longer has any reason to associate with Changxuan. Nevertheless, Changxuan continues thinking about her engagement and her insistence that he stay away. Meanwhile, Tao Ziyi gives Changxuan a birthday present that is far more valuable than an ordinary gift: the deed to the land at Changping Mountain. She has persuaded her uncle to help her obtain the property, although the land has already been promised to Tongbao Corporation. Ziyi hopes that this gift will demonstrate that she understands Changxuan's ambitions and can provide what he wants. Changxuan accepts the gift, but the land also becomes a crucial element in his broader political strategy. At the Yu residence, Chen Wanqiao encourages Zhongquan to put aside his work and rest. She washes his feet and waits until his attention is occupied before secretly examining the official documents on his desk. She discovers information concerning his upcoming military journey, including the route through Weiling. Her actions suggest that she is gathering sensitive information that could be used by people plotting against Zhongquan. Changxuan later meets Tao Xili privately. Tao wants assurance that Changxuan will leave Ziyi alone now that he has obtained the land. He doubts that the notorious playboy has genuine feelings for his daughter and suspects that Changxuan is using her for his own benefit. Changxuan responds by presenting an account book containing incriminating financial information. He explains that Mou Lin Sen possesses an identical copy, which could expose Tao's involvement in questionable dealings. Changxuan proposes a strategic partnership designed to protect both families from future conflicts involving the Yu and Mou factions. To make the arrangement attractive, Changxuan promises the Tao family favorable access to the Dongze and Beihai docks, their profits, and advantageous rights in banking, shipping, and postal services throughout Yu territory. He argues that cooperation will help Tao preserve his interests regardless of how the political rivalry develops. Tao is surprised by Changxuan's strategic thinking and realizes that the seemingly reckless young commander is more calculating than his reputation suggests. He agrees to consider the arrangement but insists that Changxuan treat Ziyi properly and not simply use her as a political instrument. Changxuan subsequently visits Ziyi with flowers and a necklace. Ziyi remains angry about his night on the boat with Pingjun and complains about his reputation for keeping women around him. Changxuan counters by pointing out that Ziyi also has numerous male admirers and knows how to manage their attention. He suggests that they are more alike than she realizes. His response eases her jealousy, and she allows him to fasten the necklace around her neck. Their relationship becomes more publicly defined, giving Changxuan the opportunity to use the connection with the Tao family to advance his political and military objectives. While Changxuan manages the political arrangement, Zhongquan proceeds with his planned journey to support the alliance. His convoy is ambushed on the road, and his guards struggle to protect him against the attackers. At the critical moment, Gu Ruitong arrives with reinforcements sent by Changxuan. The soldiers rescue Zhongquan and take him to Changxuan's military camp. Following Changxuan's instructions, Ruitong leaves Zhongquan's escort outside so that father and son can speak privately. Inside the tent, Changxuan serves his father his favorite tea and reveals that Mou Lin Sen is behind the attack. Zhongquan demands to know how his son uncovered the plot. Changxuan explains that he approached Tao Xili to learn what Mou intended to do after the earlier assassination attempt failed to stop the alliance. Through this strategy, he obtained information about the conspiracy and brought the Tao family into a position where cooperation became more advantageous than continued opposition. Changxuan also reveals that he worked with Yang Shiying to seize the weapons being smuggled by the Mou and Tao families. Yang provided troops, while Changxuan supplied intelligence, allowing them to capture the shipment and divide the weapons between their forces. In return, Yang lent Changxuan additional soldiers. The operation demonstrates that Changxuan has been building military strength independently of his father and has developed connections that Zhongquan did not know existed. Changxuan then turns the discussion toward the alliance with Governor Chu. He understands that Zhongquan hopes the alliance will secure political influence and a place in the central government, but he argues that the promise is deceptive. He presents a military reorganization plan and a battle proposal prepared by Chu for Master Cheng. The documents make no meaningful provision for the Yu Army, suggesting that Chu intends to use Zhongquan's elite forces in battle while keeping the political rewards for himself. Zhongquan refuses to abandon the alliance immediately, believing that it remains necessary for the Yu family's future. Changxuan insists that relying on other military factions will leave them vulnerable to betrayal. When his father asks whether refusing to cooperate will make him a prisoner in the camp, Changxuan confirms that he will remain there until a decision is made. He places two documents before Zhongquan: an order canceling the alliance and returning the troops to their posts, and an appointment naming Yu Changxuan commander of the Ninth Corps. The fifth episode of The Lament of Autumn marks a major turning point in both the romance and the political storyline. Changxuan discovers that Pingjun has a fiancé and visits her home to return her contract, only to find that she remains determined to keep her distance. At the same time, he allows his relationship with Tao Ziyi to become more official because the Tao family's land and political connections serve his strategic ambitions. The ambush against Zhongquan exposes the danger of the proposed alliance and reveals Changxuan's growing independence as a military strategist. By confronting his father with evidence of betrayal and demanding control of the Ninth Corps, Changxuan demonstrates that he is far more capable and ambitious than his reputation suggests. The episode leaves the Yu family facing a decisive choice about its future while Pingjun's engagement creates a new obstacle to Changxuan's growing feelings for her.
