Mousetrap Episode 6 begins with Moon-jae confronting the terrifying possibility that The Rat may not simply be an ordinary impostor. The episode briefly returns to the past, showing Moon-jae's rise as a novelist and the trauma that eventually drove him into isolation. He had won major recognition for his novels, but after losing both parents during high school and developing a severe panic disorder, he withdrew from the world. His reclusive existence later became one of the biggest weaknesses The Rat could exploit. With The Rat now publicly living as Je Moon-jae and publishing a novel based on Moon-jae's own life, Moon-jae desperately needs someone who can prove that he is the real writer. Noja initially warns him against contacting his old editor, but Moon-jae insists that Han Ji-hye may be the only person capable of recognising him. Ji-hye had been the editor-in-chief responsible for his books when he won the Best New Writer award, making her one of the few people with a genuine connection to his professional past. Moon-jae and Noja go to the police station where The Rat has already filed a complaint against the supposed impersonator. The situation is almost absurd: both sides are now claiming to be Je Moon-jae, and the police have no simple way to determine which one is genuine. The Rat calmly presents himself as the victim while Moon-jae is treated as the suspicious stranger. He even explains that he had been staying alone at a vacation home while preparing his new book, giving him an apparently verifiable alibi. Detective Park Sun-yong remains suspicious. During his questioning, The Rat explains that he had been alone at a rented house before his book release and claims nobody can personally vouch for him. Sun-yong follows the lead and contacts the vacation-home owner. She confirms that the man in the photograph stayed there for ten days, worked on his laptop every day and never appeared to leave. CCTV footage also appears to confirm that the man was Je Moon-jae. The evidence therefore strengthens The Rat's public claim that he is the real Moon-jae. Moon-jae finally meets Han Ji-hye, hoping that their history together will immediately expose The Rat. Instead, the meeting becomes another devastating setback. Ji-hye remembers the real Moon-jae as extremely shy, uncomfortable around people and reluctant even to visit the publishing house. The man who has taken his identity is completely different, yet Ji-hye believes his writing proves that he is genuine. Moon-jae tells Ji-hye that The Rat stole his identity and wrote the new novel using details from his childhood and his parents' deaths. He begs her to help him, but she refuses to accept his explanation because she is convinced that the writing itself is authentic. She has read Moon-jae's novels since his debut and believes that a person's writing cannot easily be imitated. To her, the new book's voice is proof that the man publishing it really is Je Moon-jae. The conversation leaves Moon-jae devastated. Even one of the people who should know him best cannot identify him. Noja quickly pulls him away when the situation becomes dangerous, and the two realise that every attempt to find someone who can personally confirm Moon-jae's identity is failing. Noja tells Moon-jae that he needs to discover something only the real Moon-jae could know—an undeniable piece of evidence that The Rat could never have copied. Sun-yong's own investigation continues despite pressure from his superiors. He learns that the body previously believed to be connected to a suicide may not actually have been a suicide. The case involves identity fraud, murder and the network surrounding Noja. Although his superiors want the investigation transferred to Major Crimes, Sun-yong remains interested in the contradictions surrounding the two men claiming to be Je Moon-jae. The investigation into the criminal organisation reveals another crucial connection. Park Seung-gyu, the man behind the identity-fraud operation, had created fake identities and passports for criminals and wealthy clients who wanted to disappear. His operation eventually expanded into online gambling and loan sharking. Police believe Seung-gyu fled overseas, but the people around him reveal that the man who disappeared may not actually have been Seung-gyu at all. A particularly disturbing revelation involves Kwak Sang-cheol, a wanted criminal whose face looks remarkably similar to Moon-jae's. Sun-yong discovers that Sang-cheol was connected to the same identity-fraud operation. The implication is that the criminals could deliberately transform one person into another by combining false documents, altered identities and physical resemblance. This gives Moon-jae and Noja a possible explanation for how The Rat managed to become so convincing. The criminal investigation also exposes the darker history of Seo Yu-min. The people involved in the identity ring reveal that Yu-min had been held by Seung-gyu and learned too much about the operation. He eventually became involved in stealing another person's identity and was responsible for killing a homeless man so that the victim could be officially recorded under a different identity. The homeless man's body was then cremated under another person's name, allowing the identity switch to become almost impossible to trace. The story then returns to Moon-jae and Noja as they hide from the police. Noja tells Moon-jae that they need to disappear near his hometown. Moon-jae asks why they would go somewhere so dangerous, but Noja says that his hometown contains evidence proving that he really is Noja. During their conversation, Noja also questions Moon-jae about his whereabouts at the beginning of the month. Moon-jae insists that he never left his apartment, but Soo-hyun—the only person who could have supported his claim—is dead. Then Noja delivers another devastating piece of information. The young woman who had been seen with The Rat and Moon-jae, identified by her ankle tattoo, has been found dead. CCTV from the crime scene appears to show Moon-jae at the location. According to the police evidence, witnesses also saw someone resembling Moon-jae leaving his apartment and buying beer, contradicting his claim that he had been inside for three years. Moon-jae insists that The Rat was responsible and that he never left home, but Noja admits that he cannot simply believe him anymore. While looking through old photographs, Noja discovers an extraordinary clue. A literary magazine contains a photograph of Moon-jae's parents with a child who looks exactly like Moon-jae. The photograph was published a year before Moon-jae was supposedly born. Moon-jae is stunned because his parents had always told him that they struggled to conceive him and had him late in life. If the photograph really shows Je Moon-jae, then the timeline makes no sense. Noja begins questioning whether the man beside him is actually Je Moon-jae. He confronts him directly and demands to know who he really is. Moon-jae desperately insists that he is telling the truth, but the evidence against him is becoming overwhelming. Noja then discovers information suggesting that Moon-jae has an uncle—a person Moon-jae claims does not exist. Noja's criminal-investigation methods have uncovered relatives, former acquaintances and other hidden connections that Moon-jae himself never knew about. Noja decides that the only way forward is to find this alleged uncle. He tells Moon-jae that if the uncle confirms his identity, the mystery may finally be solved. But Noja also makes the threat clear: if the uncle says that Moon-jae is not really Je Moon-jae, Noja will kill him. Moon-jae understands that he has reached the point where even his last ally is no longer completely convinced that he is telling the truth. Before they can reach the uncle safely, the pair are attacked. Gunfire erupts near Manbulam, and Noja is shot while trying to protect Moon-jae. Noja initially refuses to go to a hospital because the police are already searching for them, fearing that being captured would cause both men to be blamed for the crimes surrounding The Rat. Moon-jae tries to keep Noja conscious while they flee, but police quickly identify their vehicle and begin a high-speed pursuit. The chase becomes increasingly desperate as patrol cars surround them. Noja struggles to keep driving despite his injury while Moon-jae remains terrified that being captured will cause the police to believe he is The Rat. Eventually the vehicle is forced off the road, leaving the two men separated from their original escape plan. The episode closes with Moon-jae in a dangerous new situation. He finds himself confronted with a message demanding that he prove who he really is or die. The name of the supposed uncle—Han Hui-su—is revealed, giving Moon-jae one final lead to follow. As he struggles to understand whether he is truly Je Moon-jae, the mystery surrounding his parents, the strange photograph and The Rat's identity becomes even more complicated. Episode 6 turns Moon-jae's identity crisis into something far more disturbing. His editor cannot recognise him, the police have evidence pointing against him, Noja is beginning to doubt him, and an old photograph appears to show a version of Moon-jae existing before he was supposedly born. Meanwhile, the identity-fraud network reveals that people can literally be transformed into other identities through murder, false records and carefully constructed histories. With Noja injured and the police closing in, Moon-jae's only hope is to find Han Hui-su and finally obtain proof of who he really is.
