Our Universe Episode 9 begins with Hyun-jin finally confronting Tae-hyung's father, Sun Gyu-tae, after catching him inside the apartment. The suspicious behavior she noticed in the previous episode suddenly makes sense when she discovers what he is really looking for. Gyu-tae admits that he contacted the insurance company and presented himself as a guardian in an attempt to obtain part of the life insurance money left after Woo-jin and Hyun-joo's deaths. He argues that he is entitled to the money because Woo-jin was his son and insists that he only intends to use it temporarily before paying it back. Hyun-jin is furious. She reminds him that the money exists for Woo-joo's future and that he has no right to treat his grandson's inheritance as something he can simply divide up. When Gyu-tae refuses to leave, the argument turns physical. Hyun-jin grabs the box he has been searching through and tries to get away, but Gyu-tae throws a glass and injures her arm. Just as the situation becomes dangerous, Tae-hyung arrives home and immediately steps between his father and Hyun-jin. Tae-hyung is devastated when he realises that his father has betrayed him again. Only recently had he begun to believe that Gyu-tae might genuinely want to rebuild their relationship. Instead, he discovers that his father approached them because of money. The police take Gyu-tae away, and Tae-hyung is left trying to process the fact that the person he had cautiously allowed back into his life has once again caused harm to the people he cares about. At the police station, Tae-hyung learns another shocking piece of information. An officer named Jeon Min-cheol recognises him and reveals that he worked closely with Woo-jin. Min-cheol explains that Gyu-tae's fraud case was not some minor incident from the past. Woo-jin himself worked tirelessly to expose his father's crimes and eventually helped put him behind bars. Tae-hyung had spent most of his life believing that Woo-jin abandoned him by sending him to an orphanage. The truth is much more painful and much more loving. After Gyu-tae lost his business and became dependent on alcohol, his behavior at home became increasingly violent. Woo-jin realised that Tae-hyung was not safe and sent his younger brother to an orphanage to protect him. He then stayed behind and repeatedly tried to report their father's abuse. The police initially failed to act on Woo-jin's accusations, leaving him to continue dealing with his father on his own. Years later, Woo-jin became a police officer partly because he wanted to make sure Gyu-tae could never hurt another family the way he had hurt theirs. Min-cheol shows Tae-hyung the reports and records Woo-jin left behind, proving that his older brother had spent years protecting him from a distance. The revelation destroys Tae-hyung emotionally. He remembers all the times he blamed Woo-jin for abandoning him and finally understands that his brother had actually sacrificed his own happiness to keep him safe. When Tae-hyung returns to Woo-jin's old room, he finds photographs and records showing that Woo-jin had continued following his life and achievements even after they were separated. His brother had never forgotten him. Tae-hyung breaks down under the weight of everything he has learned. He regrets not answering Woo-jin's final phone call before the accident and realises that his brother may have been trying to warn him about Gyu-tae. He drinks with his friend Eui-jun and admits that he feels as though he has finally discovered how much his brother loved him only after it is too late to say thank you. Hyun-jin, meanwhile, is recovering from the injury to her arm. At BS Food, her colleagues are surprised to see the wound and become worried about what happened. Hyun-jin does not want to expose Tae-hyung's family problems, but she privately admits to Se-yeon that she feels guilty for encouraging Tae-hyung to give his father another chance. She believed Gyu-tae genuinely wanted to become a better father, and now Hyun-jin worries that her advice helped put everyone in danger. Yoon-seong notices Hyun-jin's injury and becomes concerned. He asks Se-yeon what happened, but she refuses to reveal details without Hyun-jin's permission. His concern nevertheless makes it clear that he is still determined to be part of Hyun-jin's life and to protect her and Woo-joo. That evening, the residents of Yooseong Villa learn what Gyu-tae really did. The neighbours feel guilty because they trusted him and welcomed him into their community. Tae-hyung's father had worked hard to appear like a harmless older man who wanted to reconnect with his son, but the truth leaves everyone feeling betrayed. When Tae-hyung returns home, Hyun-jin tries to reach him emotionally rather than question him. She prepares food and suggests that they have a beer together. She tells him that he does not have to carry everything alone and reminds him that Woo-joo and she are still his family. Tae-hyung, however, is consumed by what has happened. He says that every time he tries to trust someone, that trust eventually hurts the people around him. Hyun-jin insists that Gyu-tae's actions are not Tae-hyung's fault. She tells him that he was not responsible for his father's choices and that he should not punish himself for trying to believe that his father had changed. But Tae-hyung cannot accept the reassurance. In his mind, getting close to his father created another opportunity for the people he loves to be hurt. The next day, Yoon-seong visits Hyun-jin and Woo-joo. He brings a present for the child and notices that Hyun-jin has not eaten properly. He offers to cook for her as part of their second date. Hyun-jin is surprised by how naturally he handles the kitchen and takes care of Woo-joo. The three spend time together at the park, where Yoon-seong talks more openly about his own childhood. Yoon-seong reveals that he was raised in an orphanage before being adopted when he was in middle school. He explains that he grew up surrounded by younger children and learned to look after them from an early age. His experience makes him understand the responsibilities Hyun-jin has taken on with Woo-joo. He tells her that he wants to be a dependable umbrella for both her and Woo-joo, giving her the support she needs rather than simply asking her to choose him. While Hyun-jin is spending time with Yoon-seong, Tae-hyung makes a painful decision. He visits Gyu-tae in prison and tells him that he has taken legal steps to keep him away from Hyun-jin and Woo-joo. He makes it clear that whatever connection they once had as father and son is over. Tae-hyung then visits Woo-jin and apologises for misunderstanding him for so many years. After picking Woo-joo up from daycare, Tae-hyung brings him home and spends some quiet time with him. But the decision he has made is already clear. His apartment has been ready for some time, and he believes that remaining in Hyun-jin's home will only put her and Woo-joo at greater risk. He tells Hyun-jin that he is moving out. Hyun-jin is shocked. She reminds him that they promised to support each other and that their strange little household has become a real family. She tells him that she is not asking him to solve everything by himself and that they can face the problems together. Tae-hyung refuses. He believes that he does not know how to protect the people he loves and that he will only hurt them if he stays. Hyun-jin becomes emotional and argues that she is not perfect either. She chose to live with him because she knew she could not raise Woo-joo alone. She asks whether he has noticed how hard she has tried and whether he understands that she wants him there. Tae-hyung tells her that he does not want her to keep sacrificing herself for him because he believes she will eventually regret it. Despite Hyun-jin's attempts to stop him, Tae-hyung leaves. He returns to his own apartment, where the silence immediately feels wrong. He finds one of Woo-joo's little socks and remembers promising the child that he would not abandon him. Tae-hyung tells Woo-joo that although he cannot continue living with him, he will always be his uncle and will continue visiting him. He desperately wants the child to understand that leaving is not the same thing as abandoning him. The separation changes the atmosphere of Hyun-jin's home. Woo-joo notices that Tae-hyung is gone and becomes upset. Hyun-jin tries to keep their daily routine going, but even ordinary moments remind her of him. She finds the small notes she used to leave for Tae-hyung and realises just how much of their life together had quietly become normal. At Film Pluto, Tae-hyung throws himself into photography work to avoid thinking about his decision. His boss Amy Choo is also dealing with her own complicated relationship with Jo Moo-saeng, whose divorce is finally moving forward. Their personal situation mirrors Tae-hyung's belief that sometimes people push away those they love because they are afraid of what staying together might cost. Meanwhile, Hyun-jin and the BS Food team prepare for another shoot. Yoon-seong is attentive toward her, and the other employees begin noticing their growing closeness. Tae-hyung is also working on the same production as a photographer, forcing the former housemates to see each other again despite their separation. During the shoot, Tae-hyung overhears the staff talking about Hyun-jin and Yoon-seong. Before he can process his feelings, a ladder suddenly becomes unstable and falls toward Hyun-jin. Tae-hyung immediately rushes forward to protect her, but Yoon-seong reaches her first and pulls her out of the way. Hyun-jin later notices that Yoon-seong was injured while protecting her and becomes worried about him. Tae-hyung watches from a distance. His instinct to protect Hyun-jin has not disappeared simply because he moved out, but he convinces himself that Yoon-seong is better suited to take care of her. When Eui-jun encourages him to fight for the woman he loves, Tae-hyung refuses. He believes Hyun-jin deserves someone more stable and capable than him. As the episode moves toward its final act, Hyun-jin picks Woo-joo up from the neighbours and learns that his daycare is preparing a special family recital. She initially thinks about inviting Tae-hyung. She reaches for her phone but stops herself, knowing that he has deliberately chosen to leave. At the daycare event, families gather to watch their children perform and take photographs together. Hyun-jin becomes increasingly emotional as she watches parents and relatives proudly celebrating their children. The scene reminds her of how alone she felt growing up and how much she wanted an ordinary family of her own. She looks around and sees that Woo-joo is missing from her side. Before she can worry, he suddenly runs out of the daycare and straight toward Yoon-seong. He happily reaches for him, and Yoon-seong picks him up in his arms. Hyun-jin watches the two of them together, while the absence of Tae-hyung becomes impossible to ignore. Episode 9 ends on a bittersweet note. Tae-hyung has learned the heartbreaking truth about the brother he spent years misunderstanding and has chosen to leave the people he loves because he believes distance will keep them safe. Hyun-jin, meanwhile, is surrounded by people who care for her but is beginning to feel the emptiness left by Tae-hyung's absence. Yoon-seong is becoming increasingly involved in her and Woo-joo's lives, setting up an emotional turning point for the final episodes.
