Perfect Crown Episode 1 opens by introducing an alternate version of modern Korea where the Joseon royal family still exists under a constitutional monarchy. In this world, Seong Hui-ju has wealth, beauty, intelligence and a fiercely competitive personality, but because she was born outside her father's official marriage, she is still treated as a commoner by the elite. Years earlier, Hui-ju was already proving that she could compete with anyone. At Seonggyungwan, a prestigious school filled with students from powerful royal and wealthy families, she repeatedly ranks at the top despite being looked down upon for her background. Her confidence and refusal to accept the school's class-based discrimination eventually bring her into contact with Grand Prince Yi-an. He catches her secretly practicing archery at night, and instead of quietly accepting the unfair rules around her, Hui-ju boldly questions why someone like him is allowed privileges that are denied to her. Her fearless attitude leaves a lasting impression on Yi-an. In the present day, Hui-ju has become the successful CEO of Castle Beauty, one of her father's businesses. She is determined to keep her company ahead of her brother Tae-joo's business, but Tae-joo resorts to cheap and underhanded tactics to compete with her. Hui-ju remains confident in her own ability and refuses to let her family's constant reminders that she is illegitimate weaken her position. When Castle Beauty becomes involved with the Crown Prince's birthday celebration, Hui-ju sees the royal event as another opportunity to promote her company. At the palace, Grand Prince Yi-an is introduced as a rebellious but highly respected member of the royal family. He serves as regent for the young Crown Prince and is surprisingly popular with the public. His loyal aide Choi-hyun struggles to keep him prepared for royal duties, but Yi-an would rather go hunting than dress formally for the Crown Prince's birthday. When he finally arrives at the celebration wearing a hunting-style cheolik instead of conventional royal attire, the Queen Mother Yi-rang is furious with him. Hui-ju arrives at the palace in a striking red outfit that immediately attracts attention because the color is associated with royalty. The media labels her a fame seeker, while the palace guests gossip about her illegitimate background. Hui-ju refuses to be intimidated. She confronts the women speaking about her and later puts her brother Tae-joo in his place, making it clear that she considers herself the more capable businessperson. During the celebration, Hui-ju meets Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo, with whom she shares a comfortable and playful relationship. Meanwhile, Yi-an privately tells Jeong-woo that the Queen Mother is pressuring him to marry. Because Yi-an currently serves as regent, his marriage would mean that Jeong-woo could be forced to take over the regency. Neither man wants that outcome, so Yi-an asks Jeong-woo to use his political influence to prevent the marriage plan. Later, Yi-an catches Hui-ju wandering through a restricted area of the palace. He gives her only a few seconds to leave, but before she can respond, a sudden explosion interrupts them. Yi-an immediately rushes toward the disturbance and orders Hui-ju to stay behind. Instead, she secretly follows him. A fire has broken out inside the palace, immediately triggering Yi-an's painful memories of the fire three years earlier that killed the previous King. His first concern is the safety of the young Crown Prince. The situation becomes even more humiliating when Queen Mother Yi-rang arrives and publicly slaps Yi-an, blaming him for what happened. The Crown Prince then appears, and Yi-rang immediately turns her attention toward him. Jeong-woo becomes suspicious that the fire could be connected to the earlier tragedy involving the King and orders an investigation while the palace attempts to control the media response. Hui-ju witnesses Yi-an's humiliation and quietly leaves the celebration. The incident causes Hui-ju to remember her earlier encounter with Yi-an at school. She recalls how he once caught her practicing archery and how she confronted him over the unfair privileges given to royal students. Although she had respected him as her senior and a prince, she never hesitated to speak her mind. Back in the present, she views Yi-an as arrogant but clearly cannot forget the impression he made on her. The following day, Yi-rang apologizes to Yi-an but quickly reveals the real reason behind her actions. She believes Yi-an's popularity and position as regent are overshadowing the young Crown Prince. She wants him to prove his loyalty to the throne by marrying a woman chosen by the royal family. Yi-an remembers how his own father repeatedly warned him never to challenge the Crown Prince and even changed his royal title twice. Although those memories hurt him, he has learned to hide his feelings behind a calm exterior. At the same time, Hui-ju discovers that her own family is attempting to arrange a marriage for her. Her father, Tae-joo and Tae-joo's wife have participated in choosing a potential husband whom Hui-ju considers completely unsuitable. Furious at being treated as though she should simply accept whatever marriage is offered to her, Hui-ju warns her family that she will destroy their plans if they force her to marry an incompetent man. She insists that she is the most capable member of the family and deserves to choose her own future. While venting her frustration at work, Hui-ju suddenly realizes that she does not have to accept an ordinary arranged marriage. If she has to marry, why not choose someone who is actually as capable as she is? Her thoughts turn toward Yi-an, who has become a trending topic after his unconventional appearance at the royal celebration. She decides that the Grand Prince may be the perfect candidate. Hui-ju begins sending repeated requests for a royal audience, listing her accomplishments and positions in an attempt to convince Yi-an to meet her. Yi-an initially rejects every request, while Hui-ju becomes increasingly annoyed and interprets his refusals as him deliberately playing hard to get. Eventually, she reminds him that they attended the same school. This finally catches Yi-an's attention, and he agrees to meet her at his private residence. The Queen Mother learns that Hui-ju is going to meet Yi-an and secretly orders one of her people inside his household to keep watch. Hui-ju arrives at Yi-an's residence dressed elegantly and completely confident in her decision. Yi-an expects another formal request, but Hui-ju has something far more unexpected in mind. Looking directly at the Grand Prince, she makes her proposal without hesitation: she wants the two of them to get married. Episode 1 establishes the central conflict of Perfect Crown: Hui-ju possesses everything except the royal status society refuses to give her, while Yi-an possesses royal blood but is trapped by the responsibilities and expectations that come with it.
